EP 5: Yazz Ahmed

MARSM’s latest podcast is happy to welcome British- Bahrain trumpet and flugelhorn player Yazz Ahmed also described as “the priestess of Arabic psychedelic jazz”. 

Seeking to blur the lines between jazz and electronic sound design, Yazz Ahmed brings together the sounds of her mixed heritage in what has been described as ‘psychedelic Arabic jazz, intoxicating and compelling’.

She is known for her prolific collaborations with the likes of Radiohead, Lee Scratch Perry, Transglobal Underground, Susheela Raman, Tarek Yamani, Amel Zen, and a world tour with These New Puritans. 

As well as sold-out concerts across premiere  London venues like Purcell Room, Kings Place and the Jazz Cafe and more. 

She has thus far released 4 albums: Finding My Way Home (2011), La Soboteuse (2017), Polyhymnia (2018) and Cosmic Vibrations (2018). 

Ride with us as Yazz walks us through her childhood in Bahrain, speaks about her latest birdsong piece recorded during lockdown and reveals the stories behind her inspirational and widely acclaimed albums that solidified her position on the jazz music scene. 

From Ruby Bridges to Lahan al-Mansoor, Yazz will also tell us about the powerful women in and around her music and revealing a new song in the pipeline.
