Marsm and Shubbak present:
Rasha & Hawidro – a journey into the grooves and spirit of Afro-Arab music.
Sunday 2nd July
Bush Hall, London
HAWIDRO in Nubian means the ‘return’ and this has become the central theme of their music. Hawidro comprises 8 musicians who came together with a shared vision to create a sound that linked their African and Egyptian heritage. Featuring Vocals by Ahmed Abayazeid, Guitar, Bass Drums and traditional Percussion there is no genre out there that describes Hawidro – but if you had to choose two words it’s Afro-Egyptian. They are boundless, and encompassing everything quirky and creative about their homeland.
Rasha grew up in an artistic family who moved to Cairo to escape a war-torn Sudan. Her critically acclaimed album Sudaniyat was named by Folk Roots as “one of the 10 best of 1997”. She plays the Oud and percussion with a backing guitar and bass that accentuate Rasha’s spectacular vocal skills using Arabic poetry, Sufi music and hints of reggae. She mainly sings in Arabic but also performs in Spanish, English Nubian and Creole.
