Marsm & Shubbak Present:
Neshama Live in London
Nashama is a spellbinding contemporary project that performs traditional rhythms in digital versions, combining recordings, visionary musical adaptations and improvisation into live performances based on folkloric styles, traditional rhythms and classical Arabic music. Collecting popular songs from Syria and beyond, Neshama has created a new style of music that stands out not merely for its digital reinventions of iconic songs, but for its attitude to, and dexterity in, the field of electronic music. Not shying away from synthesisers and the electronic equipment, this enthralling fusion pays homage to the spontaneous improvisations acid electronic music movement while still transporting the listener to the epochal feel of Syrian and Arabic music traditions and life.
Featuring: Wael Alkak (synths, keys, bouzouki and vocal), Yazan Alqaq (oud, percussion and vocal), and special guest.
A year after beginning the project independently, the band was awarded an artistic residency in Paris’ Cité internationale des Arts (2014) to develop the project further. Since 2015 they have been working on their anticipated second in cooperation with Shubbak, and in partnership with the British council (London) and Culture Resource (Beirut).
