Maryam Saleh, Tamer Abu-Ghazaleh and Maurice Louca Present Lekhfa
Tickets available: HERE
Lekhfa is the creation of Maryam Saleh, Maurice Louca and Tamer Abu Ghazaleh, three legendary musicians who came of age in 1990s Cairo. Decades later, the three trailblazing musicians, each having paved their way through the alternative Arabic music scene, have united to create a stunning new album. A rapturous combination of extraordinary musical talent and creativity, Lekhfa, gives birth to an off kilter sound where layers of grit and beauty intertwine in and around the dystopian poems of their contemporary Mido Zoheir, whom they’ve dubbed the fourth ‘member’ in this creation, and one of the most talented Egyptian poets of their generation. Channeling the mood of the times, Lekhfa is inspired by the sentiment that suffuse Zoheir’s poems, calling forward contemporary realities that eschew nihilism in favor of jubilant desperation.
Teskar Tebki (drunk, you weep like a kid), is a track that best embodies the resolute yet battered spirit. Essentially an Egyptian dance track, the trio have transformed it into a dirty downbeat maqsoum with oud, buzuq, synth and guitar. With lyrics such as ‘ You whose tears fall like bricks in your heart, a branch still blooms’ Maryam and Tamer’s soulfully embody Mido Zoheir’s gut wrenching and explicit confessions. Performing with Khaled Yassine on drums, Mahmoud Waly on bass and synth, and Ghassan Bouz on percussion, make sure you don’t miss this UK premier of this stunning new piece of work from the trailblazers of the alternative Arabic music scene.
