Marsm is happy to present: Alsarah & The Nubatones Live in London!
Described by The Guardian as “the new star of Nubian pop” Alsarah will perform material from her recent album ‘Manara’ as well as from her previous album ‘Silt’ at the legendary Jazz Cafe London on Thursday 27 July bringing the East African retro pop vibes to London all the way from Sudan via New York.
Alsarah & The Nubatones came together out of a collective love for Nubian music and a genuine belief that Soul transcends all cultural and linguistic barriers. Inspired by the pentatonic scale they blend a selection of Nubian ‘songs of return’ from the 1970s-today with original material and traditional music of central Sudan. Their set is a musical journey through diaspora and migration from an urban lense.
The questions “What is home?” and “What does it sound like?” lie at the crux of the creation of Manara. As Alsarah explains: “Sometimes we leave home willingly, sometimes we are forced out, sometimes we plan to go back, and sometimes we don’t know if we’ll ever see our loved ones again. But one thing we always know is that we don’t want to forget, or be forgotten. As the sea takes us, Manara is the lighthouse anchoring our journey, and the keeper of our secrets. Not a destination, but rather a marker along the way.”
